Short answer
SEO earns your pages a ranked position in a list of search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) earns your brand a mention or citation inside an AI-written answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews. GEO builds on SEO's foundation, then adds answer-ready writing, third-party mentions, and measurement across many repeated prompts.
Key takeaways
- Google states there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, so SEO basics remain the entry ticket.
- In the original GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), adding quotations, statistics, and cited sources raised visibility in AI answers by roughly 28-41%, while keyword stuffing scored below baseline.
- SEO measures rankings, clicks, and CTR. GEO measures presence rate, citations, and share of voice across many runs of the same prompts, because AI answers change from run to run.
- Ahrefs found that an AI Overview was associated with a 58% lower position-one CTR in December 2025, so rankings alone now understate or overstate what you actually earn from search.
- Do not split budget by a fixed percentage. Run a prompt audit first, then fund GEO in proportion to how often buyers' questions trigger AI answers in your category.

For twenty years, search success meant one thing: a high position on a page of ten links. That page still exists, but more queries now end with a paragraph written by an AI model that names a few brands and cites a few sources. Getting into that paragraph is a different job from ranking, even though it rests on the same foundation.
This guide compares the two disciplines directly: what each one optimizes for, where the tactics overlap, how measurement differs, and how to add GEO to an SEO program without rebuilding everything.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?#
SEO optimizes for a ranked position that a person clicks. GEO optimizes for inclusion inside an answer the person may read without clicking at all. The unit of success shifts from "my page ranks third" to "my brand was named, my page was cited, and the description was accurate."
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A list of links on a results page | Inside a generated answer (text, list, or table) |
| Unit of success | Ranking position, click | Mention, citation, accurate description |
| Who decides | A ranking algorithm ordering documents | A retrieval step plus a language model choosing and summarizing sources |
| Main levers | Crawlability, relevance, links, page experience | All SEO levers plus answer-ready passages, evidence, and third-party mentions |
| Results stability | Rankings move slowly and are mostly repeatable | Answers vary from run to run, so you measure frequency across many runs |
| Core metrics | Rankings, impressions, clicks, CTR | Presence rate, citation rate, AI share of voice, sentiment |
| Engines covered | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
The table hides one important point: GEO is not a separate channel with separate infrastructure. An AI engine has to find your content first, and it usually finds it through a search index or a crawler. That is why the two disciplines share most of their technical foundation.
Where did the term GEO come from?#
GEO comes from a research paper, not a marketing agency. "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan, and Ameet Deshpande was posted to arXiv in November 2023 and accepted at KDD 2024.
The authors built GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries drawn from nine datasets across 25 domains, and tested how specific content edits changed a source's visibility in generated answers. They measured visibility two ways: Position-Adjusted Word Count (how much of the answer is attributed to a source, weighted toward earlier mentions) and Subjective Impression (an average of seven model-judged qualities such as relevance and influence).
Their headline result: the best methods raised visibility by up to about 40%. The details matter more than the headline, and they map directly onto the GEO vs SEO question:
- Quotation Addition (adding relevant quotes from credible sources) improved Position-Adjusted Word Count by about 41%.
- Statistics Addition improved it by about 33%.
- Fluency Optimization improved it by about 29%.
- Cite Sources improved it by about 28%.
- Keyword Stuffing, the classic bad-SEO tactic, scored about 9% below baseline.
The study also found that lower-ranked sources gained the most. For a source in fifth position, Cite Sources raised visibility by 115%, while the same edits slightly reduced visibility for the top-ranked source. In plain terms: GEO gives smaller sites a way to be quoted even when they do not rank first.

Why does SEO still matter for AI answers?#
SEO still matters because AI engines cannot cite what they cannot retrieve. Google's documentation on AI features and your website says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that "there are no additional requirements" beyond that.
The same page says you do not need special schema, AI text files, or new markup. Google's May 2025 post on succeeding in AI search repeats the classic advice: unique, non-commodity content, a good page experience, pages that return HTTP 200 and are not blocked, and structured data that matches visible content.
Outside Google, the same logic applies through crawlers. Each AI company documents its own bots, and blocking the wrong one removes you from answers:
- OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are excluded from ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot is a separate bot for model training.
- Anthropic's crawler page separates ClaudeBot (training), Claude-SearchBot (search indexing), and Claude-User (fetches for a user's question).
- Perplexity's bot guide says PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results and is not used to train foundation models.
So the technical half of SEO (crawl access, indexability, clean HTML, fast pages) is also the technical half of GEO. Skip it, and none of the GEO work below can help.
What does GEO add on top of SEO?#
GEO adds three kinds of work that SEO programs rarely do well: writing passages that can be lifted into an answer, earning mentions on sites that AI engines trust, and measuring visibility statistically rather than by position.
1. Answer-ready passages. AI engines quote passages, not pages. A section that opens with a direct, self-contained answer, names entities precisely, and includes a sourced number is easier to extract than a section that warms up for three paragraphs. The GEO paper's best methods (quotes, statistics, citations) are all passage-level edits.
2. Off-site mentions. When an engine answers "what is the best tool for X," it often draws on comparison articles, review sites, and discussion forums, not just vendor pages. Pew Research's analysis of March 2025 browsing data found Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit were the most-linked sites in Google's AI summaries. Google and OpenAI both have data agreements with Reddit: Google gained access to Reddit's Data API in February 2024, and OpenAI announced a similar partnership in May 2024. We cover the Reddit side in detail in our guide to Reddit AEO.
3. Statistical measurement. A SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai study published in January 2026 ran 12 brand-recommendation prompts 2,961 times across ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI. The odds of getting the same list of brands twice were under 1 in 100, and the same order under 1 in 1,000. Ranking position in an AI answer is close to noise. How often you appear across many runs is the stable signal.
How do GEO and SEO metrics differ?#
SEO metrics count positions and clicks on a results page. GEO metrics count how often, how prominently, and how accurately your brand shows up across a fixed set of prompts and engines. You need both, because each one hides what the other reveals.
| Question | SEO metric | GEO metric |
|---|---|---|
| Are we visible? | Impressions, average position | Presence rate: share of answers that mention you |
| Are we winning against competitors? | Share of top-3 rankings for a keyword set | AI share of voice: your mentions divided by all tracked brand mentions |
| Are we a trusted source? | Backlinks, referring domains | Citation rate: share of answers that link to your domain |
| Is it accurate? | Title and snippet you wrote | Sentiment and correctness of how the AI describes you |
| Is it paying off? | Organic clicks and conversions | AI referral sessions and conversions, branded search lift |
Search data is also shifting under the SEO column. Ahrefs' 2026 update of its AI Overviews study compared 300,000 keywords and found an AI Overview was associated with a 58% lower position-one CTR in December 2025. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one.
Google now reports some AI visibility directly. Its Search Generative AI performance reports, announced June 3, 2026 and rolled out to all sites by August 31, 2026, show impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover, broken down by page, country, device, and date. The launch post lists no click metric, and it covers only Google. For why impressions alone mislead, see which AI visibility metrics actually matter. For the formula behind share of voice, see our AI share of voice guide.
Which tactics help GEO, SEO, or both?#
Most good tactics help both. A few classic SEO tactics do nothing for GEO, and a few GEO tactics barely register in classic rankings.
| Tactic | Helps SEO | Helps GEO | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fix crawl blocks, indexing, rendering | Yes | Yes | Check AI bots separately in robots.txt |
| Direct answer in the first 1-2 sentences of each section | Somewhat | Strongly | Passage extraction favors self-contained answers |
| Add sourced statistics and expert quotes | Somewhat | Strongly | Top methods in the GEO paper |
| Keyword stuffing | No | No | Scored below baseline in the GEO paper |
| Comparison tables with named products | Yes | Strongly | Easy to lift into "X vs Y" answers |
| Link building | Strongly | Indirectly | Helps retrieval; mentions without links also count for GEO |
| Disclosed participation in Reddit and forums | Indirectly | Strongly | Must follow each community's rules |
| FAQPage schema | Rarely | Unproven | Google limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in August 2023 |
| llms.txt file | No | Unproven | Google says no AI text files are needed for its AI features |
How should you split effort between GEO and SEO?#
Split effort based on evidence from your own category, not a generic ratio. If buyers' questions rarely trigger AI answers, keep GEO small. If most of them do, and the answers name competitors but not you, GEO deserves real budget.
Use this decision sequence:
- List 30-50 buyer questions. Use sales call notes, support tickets, and "best X for Y" or "X vs Y" phrasing, not just your SEO keyword list.
- Run them across engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode). Run each at least three times, because answers vary.
- Count three things. How many questions produce an AI answer, how many of those name any vendor, and how many name you.
- Fund the gap. High AI coverage plus low presence means GEO work pays first. Low AI coverage means classic SEO still carries the program.
- Re-run monthly. AI coverage of a category changes as engines expand features, so the split should change too.
This audit is tedious by hand. Sleeng automates it: it generates buyer-intent questions from your URL, runs them on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode, and logs mentions, citations, and share of voice against your competitors.
A 30-day plan to add GEO to an SEO program#
You do not need a new team to start. Most of the first month is reusing SEO assets and adding measurement.
| Week | Work | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Run the prompt audit above. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot | Baseline presence rate and share of voice per engine |
| 2 | Pick the 5-10 pages that answer your highest-intent questions. Rewrite section openings as direct answers. Add sourced numbers and comparison tables | Answer-ready versions of your best pages |
| 3 | List the third-party pages and threads the engines cite for your questions. Identify where competitors are mentioned and you are not | A source gap list |
| 4 | Earn presence on those sources honestly: pitch corrections to comparison articles, answer relevant Reddit threads with a disclosed account where the rules allow it | First off-site mentions, then a re-run of the audit |
The GEO checklist turns weeks 1 and 2 into a scored audit you can repeat each quarter.
What mistakes do teams make when they treat GEO like SEO?#
The most common mistake is tracking a single "AI ranking" for a keyword. The SparkToro data shows positions in AI lists are too unstable to report as a rank. Track frequency across many runs instead.
Other mistakes we see often:
- Blocking the wrong bot. Blocking GPTBot stops training use; blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers. Decide each one separately.
- Reporting impressions as wins. An AI impression means your URL appeared somewhere in an AI feature, not that a buyer read it or chose you.
- Writing for the engine instead of the reader. Google's guidance and the GEO paper point the same way: clear, sourced, specific content for people.
- Ignoring how you are described. A mention that gets your pricing or category wrong can cost more than no mention. Read the answers, not just the counts.
- Treating Reddit as a link farm. Reddit's rules require authentic participation and ban content manipulation. Undisclosed brand posts get removed and can get accounts banned.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI engines retrieve from search indexes and crawled pages, so a page that cannot be crawled, indexed, or understood will not be cited either. Google says pages need to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. GEO adds work on top of SEO: answer-first writing, evidence, off-site mentions, and new measurement. It does not remove the old work.
What does GEO stand for in marketing?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. The term comes from a research paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors, posted to arXiv in November 2023 and accepted at KDD 2024. It describes optimizing content so generative engines, meaning AI systems that gather several sources and write one answer from them, include and cite it.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap almost completely. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the older term, coined for featured snippets and voice assistants, and focuses on being the answer to a question. GEO was coined for LLM-based engines and focuses on visibility inside generated responses. In practice most teams use them interchangeably and run one program that covers both.
Do I need different content for AI search and Google search?
Usually no. Google's guidance says you do not need special AI text files, new markup, or separate content to appear in its AI features. The same page can rank and be cited if it answers questions directly, supports claims with sources, and is easy to quote passage by passage. What changes is the off-site work and how you measure results.
How do I know if GEO matters for my business yet?
Write 30-50 questions your buyers actually ask, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google, and count how many produce an AI answer that names vendors. Pew Research found AI summaries appeared on 60% of question-style Google searches in March 2025. If most of your buyer questions get AI answers that name competitors, GEO matters now.
Can good SEO rankings guarantee AI citations?
No. Ranking helps because many engines retrieve from search results, but citation is a separate decision. Semrush reported in July 2025 that pages cited by ChatGPT search ranked in position 21 or lower for related queries almost 90% of the time. The GEO paper also found that pages ranked fifth gained far more from GEO edits than pages ranked first.
