How to Rank in Google AI Overviews: Get Cited in AI Results (2026)

By · Published · 12 min read

Search page with an AI overview summary citing sources

Short answer

To rank in Google AI Overviews, your page must be indexed and snippet-eligible, and your site must stay included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Beyond that, Google says normal SEO applies: rank well, answer the sub-questions its query fan-out searches for, and track impressions in the Generative AI performance report.

Key takeaways

  • Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
  • A site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console (Settings > Search generative AI) to appear; inclusion is the default.
  • As of August 31, 2026, Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions for all sites worldwide.
  • Ahrefs found 76.1% of AI Overview citations (1.9M citations, July 2025) ranked in Google's top 10 for the same query, so classic rankings still matter.
  • Pew found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.

Google AI Overviews sit above the organic results for a growing set of queries, and the brands named in them get considered first. Unlike most AI engines, Google publishes detailed guidance on how these features choose content, and it gives you a Search Console report to measure them. Most of what you need is already in Google's own documentation. The hard part is acting on it.

This guide covers the eligibility rules, how AI Overviews pick sources, what to change on your pages, how to measure citations, and how Reddit and other third-party sources factor in.

What does Google require for a page to appear in AI Overviews?#

Your page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and your site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Google says nothing else is required.

From Google's AI features and your website documentation: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Google adds that meeting the requirements does not guarantee indexing or display.

The second requirement is newer. Google's optimization guide for generative AI features (last updated July 10, 2026) says "a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible for display in generative AI features on Google Search." According to the Search generative AI control help page:

  • The setting lives in Search Console > Settings > Search generative AI.
  • Inclusion is the default for all properties.
  • Excluding a property hides its links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Google Discover.
  • The control is not used as a ranking signal for other parts of Search.
  • As of August 31, 2026, it has rolled out to all websites worldwide.
  • Child properties inherit the parent's setting unless overridden.

Check this setting first. If someone on your team excluded the site, or a URL-prefix property overrides the domain property, no amount of content work will get you cited.

How do AI Overviews choose which sources to cite?#

AI Overviews draw on Google's index and ranking systems, may run multiple related searches across subtopics (query fan-out), and then cite pages that support parts of the generated answer. Strong rankings make you a candidate; a clear answer to a specific sub-question gets you picked.

Google describes query fan-out directly: both AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a 'query fan-out' technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response." While the response is generated, they identify more supporting pages, which lets them show "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than classic results.

Two studies show how this plays out:

Study Sample Finding
Ahrefs, July 2025 1.9M citations from 1M AI Overviews (top 3 visible citations each) 76.1% of cited pages ranked in Google's top 10 for the same query
Profound, June 2025 680M citations, August 2024 to June 2025 Reddit was 2.2%, YouTube 1.9%, and Wikipedia 0.6% of all AI Overview citations

Read together: most citations still come from pages that already rank on page one, and AI Overviews spread citations across many domains rather than leaning on one. Interestingly, Ahrefs tested the fan-out theory and found the pages cited from outside the top 10 actually ranked for fewer keywords, so it concluded fan-out does not neatly explain those outliers. Treat fan-out as a reason to answer sub-questions well, not as a shortcut around ranking.

What should you change on your pages to get cited?#

Do normal SEO well, then make each section answer one question plainly in its first sentence. Google explicitly says you do not need to rewrite content for AI, chunk it into tiny pieces, or add special markup.

Google's optimization guide lists what it does and does not want. Here it is as a do and skip list:

Do Skip
Create original, non-commodity content based on what you know first-hand Rewriting pages in a special style "just for generative AI search"
Use clear paragraphs, sections, and headings Breaking content into tiny chunks; Google says there is no requirement to do so and no ideal page length
Support text with relevant, high-quality images and video Creating llms.txt or AI-only files for Google; "Google Search itself doesn't use them"
Keep important content in text, crawlable, and not blocked for JavaScript rendering Adding special schema for AI; "there's no special schema.org markup you need to add"
Reduce duplicate content and keep a clear main content area Chasing inauthentic "mentions" across the web, which Google says "isn't as helpful as it might seem"
Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile data current if you sell products or serve a locality Trusting tools that claim to use "internal" Google metrics; Google says to be wary of them

Practical moves that follow from this:

  1. Write the answer under the heading. If the sub-query is "how long does X take to set up," the first sentence under that heading should say "Setup takes about two hours for a standard account" and then explain.
  2. Cover the obvious follow-ups on the same page. For a "best X for Y" query, fan-out likely searches pricing, alternatives, and limitations. A page that covers all three with clear headings gives Google more passages to cite.
  3. Add something only you can say. Google's guidance emphasizes non-commodity content. Your own test results, customer counts you can verify, or a documented limitation all count.
  4. Keep it fresh where it matters. Update prices, versions, and screenshots, and show the update date. Do not change dates without real changes.
  5. Avoid scaled content. Google warns that pages made mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses may violate its scaled content abuse policy. Fifty near-identical "best X in [city]" pages are a risk, not a strategy.

For the full approach behind these steps, see our guide to answer engine optimization.

Which controls affect AI Overviews, and which do not?#

Use the Search Console setting, robots meta snippet rules, or noindex to limit AI Overviews. Google-Extended does not control them.

Control Effect on AI Overviews and AI Mode Effect on regular Search
Search Console > Search generative AI (exclude) Removes your links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover AI features None; not a ranking signal
nosnippet / data-nosnippet / max-snippet Limits what can be shown from the page, including in AI features Also limits classic snippets
noindex Page cannot appear anywhere in Search Page removed from Search
robots.txt disallow for Googlebot Blocks crawling for Search Blocks crawling for Search
Google-Extended Per Google, it does not impact inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal; it governs Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI None

The Search generative AI help page adds one nuance: Google-Extended can be used to limit training of the models that generate Search generative AI responses, which is separate from whether you are displayed. If your legal team wants to block AI training but marketing wants AI Overview visibility, these are two separate switches. For the Gemini app side of that choice, see our guide on how to rank in Gemini.

How do you track whether AI Overviews cite you?#

Start with Search Console's Generative AI performance report, then add a prompt panel that records which brands and URLs appear in the overview text. The report tells you about impressions; the panel tells you about competitors and wording.

1. Search Console Generative AI performance report. Per Google's help page, as of August 31, 2026 it is available to all websites worldwide and:

  • Counts impressions: "how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search."
  • Covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, and excludes Search Labs experiments.
  • Groups by page, country, date, and device, with a text versus multimodal filter.
  • Aggregates the chart by property, so two of your links in one overview count as one impression.
  • Does not show clicks, and may not appear if you have very few AI impressions. Recent data is preliminary.

AI feature traffic also appears inside the regular Performance report under the Web search type, so clicks are there but blended with classic results.

2. A weekly prompt panel. Search Console will not tell you which competitors were cited next to you, or whether the overview text named your brand without linking. For that:

  1. List 20 to 50 queries buyers use, weighted toward comparison and "best X for Y" queries.
  2. Search them logged out, in a consistent location, and record whether an overview appeared, every brand named, and every cited URL.
  3. Note whether your link is visible immediately or behind "Show more."
  4. Repeat weekly and compare your rate against your top competitors. That ratio is your AI share of voice.

3. Read clicks realistically. Pew Research Center analyzed March 2025 browsing data from 900 US adults. 18% of their Google searches produced an AI summary. Users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with a summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. A citation's value is often the brand exposure, not the click, so track mentions alongside traffic. Our guide to AI visibility metrics covers which numbers to report.

Sleeng automates the panel: it generates buyer-intent questions from your URL, runs them on Google AI Overviews and AI Mode as well as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini, and logs every brand mention and citation against your competitors.

Where does Reddit fit in AI Overviews?#

Reddit is the most cited domain in AI Overviews in Profound's dataset, and Google has a data partnership with Reddit. For comparison and recommendation queries, a well-received Reddit thread can be one of the sources Google quotes.

Context worth knowing:

  • In February 2024, Google announced an expanded partnership with Reddit giving it access to Reddit's Data API for "real-time, structured, unique content," which it said helps it better understand and display Reddit content.
  • In Profound's data, Reddit made up 2.2% of all AI Overview citations, ahead of YouTube at 1.9%, and 21.0% of the share among AI Overviews' top 10 sources.

What to do with that:

  1. Find the Reddit threads that already appear in overviews for your queries. Your prompt panel will surface them.
  2. Read each subreddit's rules before posting. Reddit's Content Policy asks users to participate authentically in communities where they have a personal interest and prohibits spam and content manipulation.
  3. Reply as yourself, disclosed. "I work at [brand]" at the start of a comment is honest and usually better received than a disguised recommendation.
  4. Add information the thread is missing, such as a pricing change, a setup detail, or an honest note on who your product is not for.
  5. Never manipulate votes or use multiple accounts. Beyond breaking Reddit's rules, Google's guidance notes that inauthentic mentions are not as helpful as they seem.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need schema markup or llms.txt to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation states there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and that Google Search does not use llms.txt or similar AI text files. Keep using structured data for rich results, and make sure it matches the visible text on the page, but do not expect markup alone to earn a citation.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

Google-Extended is not the control for AI Overviews. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search; it governs Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. To remove your site from AI Overviews and AI Mode, use Settings > Search generative AI in Search Console, or snippet controls such as nosnippet.

Where can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the Performance report under the Web search type. Search Console also has a separate Generative AI performance report showing impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, date, and device. It shows impressions, not clicks, and may not appear for sites with very few AI impressions.

Why does my page rank on page one but never appear in the AI Overview?

Ranking makes you a candidate but does not guarantee selection. AI Overviews may run several related searches through query fan-out and pick passages that support specific parts of the answer. A page that ranks for the head term but never states a clear, quotable answer to a sub-question may lose to a lower-ranked page that does.

Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?

No. Both are generative AI features in Google Search and share the same eligibility rules, controls, and Search Console reporting. AI Overviews appear inside the regular results page. AI Mode is a separate conversational experience that also uses query fan-out and may show a wider set of links. Track them both, since the same page can appear in one and not the other.

Do AI Overviews still send traffic?

Less than classic results, according to Pew Research Center's March 2025 browsing study of 900 US adults. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary in only 1% of visits that showed one. Being cited still matters because the summary shapes which brands people consider, so measure impressions and brand mentions as well as clicks.
